Her mindset, especially with diabetes patients, is education-focused. Keeping patients from the stress of the debilitating condition, keeping them home and away from the hospital, and equipping them with the right tools to keep their blood sugar stable are my priorities. Education and management of the condition makes an impact on the individual, society and health care costs.
Dr. Khayal became a physician because she felt it was the best way for her to help people. With the favorite motto knowledge is power, Dr. Khayal enjoys the science of endocrinology and how the human body works. "Endocrinology itself requires a lot of thinking," Dr. Khayal said, "as most functions work in a loop with several factors impacting each other. I like the challenge."
Dr. Khayal's philosophy of patient care is to be honest with the patient and give them the tools to take care of themselves properly. "When you treat a patient, you always keep in mind this could have been your relative, your friend, or even yourself," Dr. Khayal said. "As a mom with a teenager and school-age child, I'm sensitive to the communication needs of patients and families too. In the end, my goal is to make myself a better physician every day. At the end of the day if I feel like I have made a difference in my patients lives, it lifts my spirits."
