Nazneen Ahmed, MD, is a gastroenterologist at Regional One Health and an assistant professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Dr. Ahmed received her medical degree from University of Dhaka Medical College in Dhaka, Bangladesh. She completed her internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago.

“I became a physician because I believe it is a family tradition,” Dr. Ahmed said. “My father is a surgeon, my brother is a urologist and my son is a physician. We have accepted the medical profession as our goal in life to serve people.”

Dr. Ahmed’s patient care philosophy is to take care of all of her patients above anything. “My patient care philosophy has been always to serve our patient population first, but with the change in our health care policy and limitation of patients’ access to health care it has been difficult,” Dr. Ahmed shared. “I trained in my early years at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, which serves an indigenous population and we provided health care to everybody without their ability to pay.”

Now as a full-time physician in Memphis, Dr. Ahmed still believes in putting her patients first and helping them with making decisions. “I believe in ‘shared decision making’,” Dr. Ahmed said. “In patient care, we need to spend time with a patient, which has become difficult with electronic medical records.”
