Anesthesiology services at Regional One Health
Jaya Ramanathan, MD is an anesthesiologist at Regional One Health and professor in the department of anesthesiology at University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Dr. Ramanathan received her medical degree from Kerala University in Trivandrum, India. After completing her training in anesthesiology at the Leeds Infirmary, England, Dr. Ramanathan secured her first part of the Fellow of the Faculty of Anesthetists of Royal College of Surgeons, England and proceeded to the USA with her husband. She completed her residency in anesthesiology and fellowship in obstetric anesthesia at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA.
“My step-grandmother, Kamala Nair, MD, MRCOG, inspired me to become a physician,” Dr. Ramanathan shared. “She was the only physician in our entire family and at the time, the only obstetrician with a post-graduate degree from England in the entire state of Kerala, India. She did not get paid much for her services; she showed compassion and care towards all of her patients and had incredible clinical skills. After being with her and watching her, I could not imagine being anyone other than a physician.”
When Dr. Ramanathan is caring for her patients, she views it as a combined effort with a team approach. “For me, a practicing OB anesthesiologist, the team consists of the obstetricians, nurses, anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, and neonatologists,” Dr. Ramanathan said. “Each of us play an important role in patient care with a common goal, namely, satisfactory outcomes, happy mothers, and healthy babies."
