Ashekia Pinckney, MD, is an OB/GYN physician at Regional One Health. Dr. Pinckney earned her medical degree from Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and completed her obstetrics & gynecology residency at University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
“I became a physician because adequate health care is a necessity that many individuals don’t have access to,” Dr. Pinckney said. “I was unfortunate enough to be from a rural town in South Carolina, of which I saw many individuals have to travel miles and wait extremely long periods of time in order to see a physician. My personal experiences gave me the purpose of working in health care to fill the needs of others.”
Dr. Pinckney chose women’s health as her particular field due to women being unique individuals with very different health care needs. “The relationship between an OB/GYN and their patients is an intimate relationship,” Dr. Pinckney shared. “As physicians, we are fortunate enough to share in huge milestones in their life. My favorite part of my job is being able to look in a mother’s eyes the first time they are able to see their newborn.”
While treating her patients, Dr. Pinckney believes in empowering them through education. “The hospital is a very intimidating place to most individuals and medicine can be very difficult to understand,” Dr. Pinckney said. “Every patient is different and every disease manifests itself differently, I believe that proper education about health care allows patients to make the best decisions for them.”
