Almost 100,000 Americans are hospitalized each year due to serious burns.
At the Firefighters Burn Center we help burn survivors return to normal, productive lives as quickly as possible. Our surgery, wound care, rehabilitation, and restorative medicine services are available to adolescents (14 and up) and adults devastated by serious burns. Firefighters Burn Center has earned verification from the American Burn Association (ABA) and the American College of Surgeons (ACS), making it the only Burn Center in Tennessee to earn this distinctive honor. Firefighters Burn Center takes part in a variety of education and community outreach activities with the goal of preventing burn injuries. Our full-service Burn Center:
- Treats more than 500 patients annually, including 300 inpatient admissions
- Is the only full-service Burn Center of its kind within a 150-mile radius of Memphis
- Features 14 beds, an outpatient clinic, surgery facilities, a rehabilitation center, a research division, and special cutting-edge burn care equipment
Meet our Medical Director: Ram Velamuri, MBBS, MS, DNB, MRCS-Ed
Working with burn patients is a challenge, but one Dr. Ram Velamuri embraces with skill and compassion. As Medical Director at the Firefighters Burn Center, Dr. Velamuri leads a team that takes a multidisciplinary, family-focused approach to caring for patients.
Dr. Velamuri earned his medical degree at Padmashree Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College in India. He held residencies at Saint Louis University School of Medicine and a fellowship at Johns Hopkins University. He is a member of numerous professional organizations, a sought-after presenter at national and international conferences and author of over a dozen publications and articles. He is plastic surgery program director at University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
Dr. Velamuri is grateful for mentors who have shown him the important role plastic surgeons play in the successful treatment of burns. As a board-certified plastic surgeon, he works with patients not only when they need critical care, but when they are recovering and returning to day-to-day life. By providing lifesaving surgeries and those that address cosmetic and functional deficiencies, Dr. Velamuri helps patients achieve not only life, but quality of life.
