Jeffrey Nelson, MD is the medical director for Regional One Health’s Palliative Care service. When a patient is living with a serious illness, palliative care physicians, nurses and social workers partner with their medical team to support quality of life, provide relieve for symptoms and stress, assist with treatment decisions, and more.

Dr. Nelson earned his medical degree at Chicago Medical School of Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, then completed a residency in family medicine and a fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine at University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. He is board certified in hospice and palliative medicine and in family medicine.

Dr. Nelson’s clinical and academic work focuses on the impact of palliative care in hospital systems and on establishing comprehensive, interdisciplinary palliative care services across the care continuum in Shelby County.

As a clinician, he oversees palliative care services at several facilities in the Mid-South. In his academic role, he is assistant professor in the UTHSC Department of Internal Medicine and serves as course director for the geriatrics and palliative care 4th year rotation at the College of Medicine. During his career he has earned honors including Physician of the Quarter, the Golden Apple Award, and the Teacher of the Year Award.

Outside of work, Dr. Nelson enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, as well as the family’s two dogs, two cats and horse.
