Carol Simmons, MSN, FNP-C, is a family nurse practitioner at Regional One Health’s Primary Care Specialists. Simmons earned earned her Master of Science in Nursing degree from Clarkson College in Omaha, Nebraska and got her Post Master's Certificate for Family Nurse Practitioner from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
Simmons concentrates her practice on long-term care working with patients in nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. Her health care career began as a registered nurse in neurology at Methodist Hospital in 1986. She spent several years in various nursing positions in the Memphis area before starting a career as a nurse practitioner in 2005.
“I worked in hospitals, taught nursing and worked in all different fields in health care. When I became a nurse practitioner, I worked in internal medicine for five years and then started doing long-term care and realized I loved it,” she said. “It’s very fulfilling to help people in that last phase of life.”
Simmons has worked in long-term care for eight years, including since September 2015 at Primary Care Specialists.
She described her philosophy of care as a partnership.
“You partner with the patient and the family to try to provide the best care and individualize it,” she said. “A good plan of care has to be individualized. It’s not a cookie-cutter approach, especially with the elderly.”
