Michelle Surbrook, MD
Emergency Medicine services at Regional One Health
Michelle “Shelly” Surbrook, MD, is a physician at Regional One Health and an assistant professor in the department of internal medicine at University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Dr. Surbrook received her medical degree and completed her residency in internal medicine at University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
“I became a physician in order to help people and relieve suffering like most doctors,” Dr. Surbrook said. “I feel it takes a special doctor to be willing to see all sorts of patients with major social issues on top of their medical problems.” Dr. Surbrook believes that one should attempt to treat every patient as if he or she was a family member and sometimes it calls for tough love. “I have had patients tell me that no one in their lives ever told them that they could or should try to do better and that is a really sad commentary in our society,” Dr. Surbrook shared. “I take the time to “fuss” with a patient because it means I care and they seem to understand and appreciate it.”
Dr. Surbrook feels doctors have to be willing to think outside of the box and take care of the entire patient. “I love seeing people later that we were able to have a major impact upon and know that we had a part in that,” Dr. Surbrook said. “The emergency department is a small and very tight group, so I consider it a point of pride that I have been working here for 18 years and there is nowhere else I would rather be.”
